Character: Gina Lestrade
Canon: The Great Ace Attorney; Post-The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve
Age: 18
Background Information: Her wiki background seems to be incomplete, so here goes-
Gina Lestrade was an street orphan living in London's East End who originally made her living as a pickpocket, or a 'diver'. One evening, she witnessed conniving businessman Magnus McGuilded murder another man, and McGuilded blackmailed her into doing several tasks for him, including lying to enforce his alibi in court. With her help, McGuilded was cleared of murder charges, but he was himself murdered soon afterwards. Several months later, Gina attempted to claim an item of McGuilded's from the pawnbroker in hopes of making money off of a disc that he had claimed was worth a lot of money. But the pawnbroker, Pop Windibank, believed it to be worth nothing, and she soon lost the disc after it was confiscated as one of McGuilded's possessions, and a man calling himself Eggert Benedict also challenged her claim to the item. She spent time at the Sholmes residence for part of the night, because the young child Iris Wilson had roped her into friendship. She learned that Sholmes had decided not to publish one of her manuscripts and kept it stored at Windibank's. Gina's distrust of adults caused her to doubt this story, and she wanted to see for herself whether Sholmes had lived up to his word or lied to her and sold the manuscript off. So she broke into Windibank's, only to find Windibank reluctantly willing to show her the manuscript. At the same time, Benedict also broke in with a pair of thugs. In the following confrontation, Benedict fatally shot Windibank, and Gina passed out clutching Windibank's gun. She was arrested as the suspect in Windibank's murder, but Ryunosuke Naruhodou showed up to defend her. Gina attempted to get them to give up on her and even confessed to how she helped with McGilded's perjury. But Ryunosuke and friends remained dedicated to Gina's innocence and got her to lower some of her walls. Ultimately, they proved her innocence in court. She still had to serve several months of jail time for her other crimes, however.
Upon her release, Sholmes pressured Detective Tobias Gregson of Scotland Yard into agreeing to a unique situation in which he took Gina in and trained her as an apprentice detective, as she had developed a liking for solving mysteries and this was one way to get her off the streets. So Gina began working as Gregson's apprentice and gave herself the title of Inspector Gina Lestrade. She also got to raise a dog that could help in police matters, whom she dubbed Chief Inspector Toby. She also increased her studies by this point and learned how to fully read the alphabet by the end of the second game. She worked with Ryunosuke on several cases, but the second one came straight for her heart, as Gregson was murdered. Gina took it personally and put her all into the investigation, while sparing no pity for the suspect, the prosecutor Barok von Zeiks. She was initially made at Ryunosuke for choosing to defend him, but she ultimately had to face several uncomfortable truths in the courtroom, including the fact that Gregson part of a group of people who carried out the killings of criminals under the guise of the Reaper. In the aftermath of the trial, Gina initially planned to return to pickpocketing, but she was ultimately convinced to stick with the path of the detective and carry on Gregson's legacy.
Personality:
Gina is capable of being cheery and even friendly to others, although she can also be quick to anger. Her frustration can especially mount when she does not know something. She can be quite snarky about situations and often resorts to using slang, and she can tend to bicker even with people she cares about. Gina can tend to put on a rough facade to hide how soft-hearted she really is.
In her past as a pickpocket, she was used to living as a loner. She distrusted others, especially adults and authority figures, and she would sabotage attempts to get closer to her. These elements of herself have faded for the most part over time, as people like Iris, Ryunosuke, Susato and Sholmes managed to win her over. She has accepted some others as her friends and has become more open about positive subjects such as friendship. Gina can still be somewhat guarded with her feelings, although she is now less hesitant to seek out others when she needs help. Her dynamic with Herlock is a particular example where she will often act irritated or embarrassed by him, but she also seems to look up to him and ultimately finds him to be reliable. She ended up feeling similarly towards Gregson, but with a lot more bickering involved.
Gina has also faced guilt for her past actions, especially the lies she told for McGuilded. These fed into self-worth problems that she exhibited when she tried to drive Ryunosuke and the others away when she was on trial, but ultimately she got through that with her help. At the end of that trial, Gina came to feel that she was a good person at heart, and she felt that the Reaper must ultimately be like God, or "'Im Upstairs", who knows the difference between people who are good at heart and those who are truly bad.
She has even ended up working with her former enemies in the law, despite some struggles fitting in as a former criminal among police. Her choice in occupation was partially a way for her to reform her ways, but she also generally was intrigued by solving mysteries and crimes. She has also sought out more of an education, gathering book-smarts to match her street smarts. She shows excitement and pride for every step she takes in learning things, but her wits are not perfect, as she can have trouble grasping complex situations and many things can still go over her head. Despite this, Gina has even become boisterous and is insistent on making others acknowledge her own self-proclaimed truths, such as giving herself the title of Inspector and Toby the rank of Chief Inspector.
Despite her steps towards becoming a proper detective, she can have trouble accepting the facts when her emotions clash with them. This was on full display in the last cases of her canon, due to the toll Gregson's death took on her. She was initially mad at Ryunosuke for choosing to defend the suspected killer in court, and she also refused to believe that Gregson had acted as the Reaper. She was in denial for some time before she had to face the facts. Gina has also always shown a protectiveness for others, especially Iris. She went through great lengths to try to prove to Iris whether or not Herlock was lying to her although she also did so for the sake of her own peace of mind about trusting others. This also extended to her wanting to help Iris find her father, which was another part of the reason why she joined Scotland Yard. Ultimately, Gina has come to question whether she's cut out for her profession or should go back to pickpocketing, but she has ultimately chosen to keep going as a detective to live up to Gregson's legacy, or at least the nicer parts of it. She has also come to understand more about Gregson after finding a letter from him, which helped her to realize that he had her best interests at heart. At the same time, the fact that she considered returning to pickpocketing also means that she still considers that to be a valid path for herself.
Abilities & Inventory:
- Toby: A small dog with a talent for tracking others by smell. I intend to treat this as Toby's actual dream self tagging along with Gina.
- A smoke grenade launcher that she seems to always carries on her person. It fires out brightly-colored smoke grenades and is somehow also capable of shooting fireworks! I'm intending for it to essentially be fueled by Dreamotion energy in the game, so Gina's emotions or thoughts can effect things such as the color of the gas or what types of projectiles will be fired.
- Minor items include her satchel and her police armband!
Suitability & Plans: Gina feels like she has a lot of potential in a setting like this! While she can have trouble visualizing new concepts, she can still be quite imaginative and let her creativity run wild once she gets used to things. While she has undergone character development in canon, there's still room for more growth, and I would like to explore more of her dealing with her trust issues in befriending others beyond her canonmates and also continuing to face the specter of Gregson's legacy and the morality of his deeds. A lot of her issues can play nicely into dreams and emotional effects! There's also a lot of room for her to learn in general about so many things while outside of her own world and time!
Also, as she's gone from pickpocket to detective and nearly went back again, I want her to explore more of who she really wants to be, in a world with limitless possibilities.
